The Association between Suicide Attempts and Alcohol Use

Abstract

|
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between suicide attempts and alcohol use among individuals who experienced suicidal thoughts.
Methods: This study conducted a secondary analysis of the 2010?2012 Korea National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey data. The study included data from 2,616 adults (over 19 years old) who had experienced suicidal ideation within the last year. The data were analyzed using ¥ö2test, as well as SPSS win 20.0 for logistic regression.
Results: The study found a significant association between alcohol use and suicide attempts. Suicide attempts were 2.12 times more likely for individuals who abused alcohol and 1.25 times more likely for individuals who were alcohol dependent. These results remained significant when demographic and psychological characteristics were controlled.
Conclusions: It is necessary to consider drinking problems when formulating policy for suicide prevention among individuals with suicidal thoughts.
